Elmwood Spa and Bangkok Garden House Policy for Responsible Alcohol Service

Elmwood Spa and Bangkok Garden are dedicated to our guests’ pleasure and enjoyment, including the service of alcohol in accordance with the Liquour License Act and Regulations as administered by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. This House Policy sets forth safe alcohol use practices that help us remain compliant with Ontario’s liquor laws and minimize any potential harm to our guests, staff and property. The following policies apply to all guests of Elmwood Spa and Bangkok Garden:

1. Legal Drinking Age
To help ensure that we only serve alcohol to guests of legal drinking age, we will check valid government identification for anyone appearing to be 25 years of age and under.

2. Designated Areas
Alcohol consumption is only permitted in licensed areas that are clearly marked.

3. Training of All Staff
All Food and Beverage staff along with Guest Service Representatives are Smart Serve trained in the legal and safe service of alcohol. They recognize the signs of intoxication and know how to intervene to keep guests safe. Staff are prohibited from drinking alcohol during their shift.

4. Monitoring Alcohol Consumption
Staff will promote safe and responsible drinking by recognizing the signs of intoxication and in keeping with the law, not serve patrons past the point of intoxication. Patrons who are already intoxicated will be denied alcohol service and offered non-alcoholic beverages as an alternative.

5. Monitoring the Premises
Staff will check identification for proof-of-age (only Ontario Driver’s Licence, BYID card, Canadian Armed Forces ID card, Canadian passport or Canadian Citizenship card will be accepted), deny access to rowdy or intoxicated persons and prevent overcrowding. Guests are not permitted behind the bar. No unauthorized alcohol is allowed on the premises.

6. Food Service
A range of spa cuisine and non-alcoholic and low-alcoholic beverages are offered in the Terrace restaurant and light snacks are available at the juice bar at all times. Spa guests are welcome to enjoy our complimentary line of Elmline teas and flavoured waters.

7. Underage Guests
Guests who are under legal age are welcome; however, they are not allowed to consume alcohol. Staff are trained to identify underage guests. Minors must be accompanied by responsible adults.

8. Transportation
Staff will gladly assist guests who need a safe ride home with arranging alternative transportation (with expenses the responsibility of guests). If a guest insists on driving while at risk of being impaired, for the safety of our guests,
police will be called.

9. Managing the Intoxicated Guest
Staff will politely and carefully deal with any guest who becomes intoxicated or is acting dangerously and will take the following steps:
a.) If the guest is visibly intoxicated, the guest will be refused beverage service, asked to immediately surrender their car keys and offered assistance to arrange alternative safe transportation home.
b.) Keep a log of any problem situations to be reviewed regularly by food and beverage management.

11. Reviewing this Policy
The policy will be reviewed annually.
